A businessman with a dark secret, a Russian assassin and a provincial journalist are caught up in a terrifying deception orchestrated by a sociopathic MI6 operative.

1984 Ronald Reagan has announced the Strategic Defence Initiative (otherwise known as Star Wars) plunging the British Government into a state of shock. With the Cold War in its death throes, the UK has neither the funds nor the technology to match its allies. However MI6 has always known that it doesn’t matter if you actually have the gun or not, so long as your enemy thinks that you do. Covert operative Colin Medlin is tasked with orchestrating a credible deception regarding the UK’s own Missile Defence programme.

Medlin’s bloody business has far-reaching consequences entrepreneur Paul Jones discovers his lucrative contract with the government comes with strings attached; KGB assassin, Sofia Petrovna, believes herself to have been abandoned by her country and left to rot in suburban Britain - until she is given a list of names and a gun; disillusioned local hack Tom Riggs stumbles upon the conspiracy, but can barely hold down his lowly job at a provincial newspaper.

This perilous game, where one lie hides another, stretches across two decades and seven countries. In the maelstrom that Medlin unleashes, not everyone will get out alive.

Damaged States is the first in a planned trilogy of novels featuring Colin Medlin a man reluctant to die for his country, but who won't think twice about killing for it...

Damaged States A Dark Conspiracy Thriller edition by Ben Chase Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

A wonderfully written book, which had me hooked from the beginning. Ben Chase has put together a very cleaver story, with diverse characters and an edgy plot. Nathalie is a trained Russian Assassin living in London, and you definitely don’t want your name on one of her lists. She’s integrated herself into British society with a normal job, and a place to live. However once given a name, she will stop at nothing to eliminate them in. Quite often in a very violent manner. Tom’s a journalist who starts to piece together quite a few suspicious deaths, and they all seem to have something in common. Most of them being recorded as suicides, when they are obvious murders being covered up. Problem being that the Government might be the ones doing the covering up. Somehow Tom manages to start piecing his investigation together, in between his heavy drinking sessions. Paul Jones had a great life with his own company, being single and pretty much hassle free. Until he lets himself be blackmailed into passing names onto a man he doesn’t know. He finds his world pretty quickly turned upside down. I like that the Author has made some of the characters quite flawed, and I couldn’t help but be pulled along by this very entertaining and interesting story. If you enjoy International Espionage, then this is definitely a Thriller worth reading.

Damaged States A Dark Conspiracy Thriller edition by Ben Chase Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I must say this book is well organized, well defined, well structured and well written. It had me hooked from the very beginning. Ben Chase has managed to come up with a very clever, keep you on your toes type of plot and it was well executed.

It was filled with a group of very diverse characters. Deep, yet dark characters from different walks of life -Paul James, a businessman with a dark secret, Nathalie, a trained assassin and Tom, a provincial journalist. Flawed characters with their own intriguing bit of history.

The story focuses on how these so very different characters come together through their one commonality. I won’t tell you too much of the story but their challenging journey unfolds layer by layer the lies and secrets.

If you love international espionage you will love this dark conspiracy thriller.
An amazingly written thriller that it sets in one of the most intriguing part of history the Cold War.
Everything is made up really well, the dialogue is nice although with some really heavy words right from the beginning, the characters are also excellent, I really like a history that has different angles that leads to the same climax, and to think of a connection between a mercenary in a foreign land, a journalist and a business man, how everything flows nicely, once you start reading, it’s hard not to stop.
I was reading the description and it says this is the first of an upcoming trilogy, while I’ll be more than delighted to see what’s comes next in this series, I would like the author to depart from the M16 and government stuff. It’s just there are so many stories that follow the same thing and this book its proof that it can provide so much more. There’s a little bit of ground-breaking here but it can be so much more and better, hopefully the next book proves to be what I’m expecting.
“Damaged States” is an amazing thriller and I personally love thrillers and this one I surely did. The book has colorful dark characters from different walks of life - a trained Assassin Nathalie, a rustic journalist Tom and a business man Paul James with dark secrets. None of the characters are perfect so you will not fall in love with them. But what is great is the exciting plot and the continuous rides of thrills.

The story is about how all the so very different characters that have one commonality, which is they all are trapped and deceived by the sociopathic MI6 operative. It’s their challenging journey that unfolds layers of lies and secrets with violence also as an element.

This is the first book in the Trilogy and there is more thrill to come. All in all a great thrilling drama, full of suspense, colorful character variations and an exciting read.
A bad-ass female protagonist who doesn’t make me cringe from the stereotyping is probably one of the best things to come across in literature at the moment, and the female lead of this story is told admirably well, as are the male leads. Both are supremely flawed, and extremely relatable, characters, with motivations that make a twisted kind of sense. Of course, no good conspiracy / spy / security / assassination / blackmail story is complete without a believable villain and here, author Ben Chase delivers just as admirably.

Some truly epic research and planning must have gone into this book to hold the storylines together as well as this author did. Spanning two decades and sprinting across the globe, the story is held together with a tight rein, but is nonetheless told at a pace that maintains the excitement, draws you into the intrigue and occasionally delivers breath-stealing and heart-stopping thrills. In a world where the Bond-style hero is becoming less relevant, this story embraces the flawed and imperfect antihero instead and sets this author up for a long and successful career.
I usually like a good thriller. Am not too crazy on conspiracy thriller, but I thought I would give this one a go. The book is well written, although readers should be advised that the text contains a lot of swearing from the very first few sentences. So parents may wish to vet the book or consider it carefully before allowing their children to read it (if you were even planning to in the first place that is!). I liked the fact that the story is set over the course of two decade – you don't often find that in a book so that implies the author thought it out well.

The author seems to be well qualified to write a book in this niche or of this nature, since according to his bio he had worked in the industries his main characters find themselves thrown into. I suppose it is a good idea to let your mind wander when you have a 9-5 job, as it stops you from getting too bored. Bored is definitely what you wouldn't be when you read the author's book however, since it is full of action from the get go. Would recommend.
